Project Discription: Scratch - Short Film
Scratch (2006) was written back in November of 2005, and shooting began in early December and ran for 4 weeks with a break over the Christmas period. Jonathan shot the short on DV using the Canon XL1s with some homemade upgrades to increase the look of the film. The biggest problem when choosing to use DV is the looseness. We would have liked to have used a 35mm with 4.4.4 but because of budgetary reasons we opted for DV which has a 1.2.1 output. Using the lens of an SLR 35mm and a broken CD player we were able to get higher DOF which takes the video look away slightly, we also managed to build a matt box to control the amount of light that would be allowed into the lens which would, in post production, give us the ability to add a higher contrast to the film and layering the raw footage with a black matt we were able to give a film feel to the short.
The editing and post production of Scratch started two months after calling a rap on the shooting. When Scratch was written it was aimed to be a feature but mid shooting there were complications (budget issues) so Jonathan opted for a good tight short rather than a feature with holes.
“ There is no point in just getting a shot or filling gaps, I plan every frame, if it's not 100% I won't use it” Jonathan Joly Scratch Director.
