Let's go back to December of 2007, I was given my brief for my Higher National Diploma flash interactive project, the brief laid out some guild lines that the project must adhere to, simply must use action script to allow the user to control the experience. At the time my main interest was in 3d animation and digital composite therefore I wasn't very excited when I read the brief. After weeks of brain storming I came up with my final idea which was to incorporate my main interests into the project to keep my interests and to further my research into 3d animation, I came up with a 3d environment to be used as a portfolio for my work which would be controlled by the user. When I first set out this taste my main concern was how the functionally of this interface would run. My options fell short in terms of pre-rendered avi embedded into the fla timeline or to render each frame and to place scripting to control the movement and framing numbering to allow the user to control the interface. But there wasn't really a third option. I completed the project using both options and the project was deemed a success, and I achieved a merit result --> Click here to view
As time went on and I moved onto other projects I kept wondering if there would be any other way that I could let the user control the experience or to give even more control to the user than currently technically possible, the answer is yes there is, let me introduce you to Dr Johnny Chung Lee, a recent graduate from Carnegie Mellon University with a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction. http://www.johnnylee.net . After seeing his research on motion tracking and IR headtracking I was instantly excited with the idea that this idea could be transformed into the solution for my interactive project.
